AirPlay 2

With AirPlay 2, every one of your rooms appears directly as a speaker on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. You can also easily group your rooms with other AirPlay 2 speakers and play music across all of them together.

What problem does AirPlay / AirPlay 2 solve?

AirPlay 2 is Apple's technology for streaming music wirelessly from an iPhone, iPad or Mac to speakers on the network. Compared with the original AirPlay, AirPlay 2 can play to several rooms at once in sync, and you can also control playback via Siri or the Home app.

Not every piece of music is available as a direct streaming source within the trivum system: a podcast, an audiobook, the sound from an app, or simply the playlist a guest happens to have on their phone. With AirPlay 2, you can send anything your Apple device is playing to the trivum speakers with just two taps – no extra app or cable required.

How does trivum integrate AirPlay / AirPlay 2?

Every trivum zone appears on your iPhone as its own AirPlay speaker. Simply choose the room in Control Centre or in the Music app, and the music starts playing. As soon as an AirPlay stream arrives, trivum automatically switches on the corresponding zone.

Benefits of AirPlay / AirPlay 2

Works with practically any app on iPhone, iPad and Mac, without you having to install anything. You can select several rooms at once, and AirPlay 2 keeps them in sync. The music runs through trivum, so it uses the same volume control, the same touchpads and the same KNX control as any other source.

How can you customise AirPlay / AirPlay 2 in the setup?

You decide which zone switches on automatically when a stream starts, and what the AirPlay speakers are called on the iPhone – for example, simply "Kitchen" instead of a technical name. To avoid any nasty surprises, you can also limit extreme volume jumps coming from the iPhone. You can also set how long trivum waits after a stream ends before switching the zone off.

What are the limitations of AirPlay / AirPlay 2 support?

AirPlay needs a network that lets devices discover one another. If your Wi-Fi and audio devices sit on different network segments or VLANs, the iPhone often won't see the trivum zones unless the router is configured accordingly. AirPlay is an Apple technology, so Android phones can't use it without an extra app. And because of the delay involved, AirPlay isn't ideal for TV sound – Line-In is the better choice there.
